Vietnam is a very good place to spend Christmas and New Year, as long as you choose your region with the weather in mind. The south is warm and dry, which makes it the safest bet for beaches and river trips. The north is cooler and sometimes gray, but it is full of atmosphere in the cities. The central coast is the wild card, because rain can linger there well into December.
This guide explains what the weather looks like in each part of the country, how the holiday season is celebrated, which destinations suit different kinds of travelers, and what to book early. It also includes three sample itineraries you can adapt.
The short answer: where to go at Christmas and New Year

| If you want… | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warm, sunny beach weather | Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta | The south is in its dry season from roughly December to April. |
| Cooler weather and city atmosphere | Ha Noi, Ninh Binh | Cool temperatures, festive streets, and good food. |
| Mountains and cold-weather scenery | Sa Pa, Ha Giang | Cold and often misty, but dramatic. Pack warm layers. |
| A cool, flowery retreat | Da Lat | Dry-season highland weather with mild days and cool nights. |
| History and heritage | Hue, Hoi An | Beautiful, but rain is still possible in December. Plan flexibly. |
Weather in December and early January, region by region
Vietnam is long, so the weather changes with the latitude and the coast. These are general patterns, and individual years vary.
Southern Vietnam
The south is the most reliable region for the holiday season. December to April is the dry season, with sunshine, warm temperatures, and calmer seas. Ho Chi Minh City is hot and bright, the Mekong Delta is green and easy to explore by boat, and islands such as Phu Quoc and Con Dao offer classic beach weather.
Because conditions are so good, this is also the busiest time of year for the south. Expect higher demand for flights, resorts, and boat trips.
Northern Vietnam

The north has a genuine winter. Ha Noi can be cool, damp, and overcast in December, with a light drizzle on some days. Temperatures are comfortable for walking, but you will want a jacket in the evening. In the mountains, such as Sa Pa and Ha Giang, it is colder, and mist and fog are common. On clear mornings the views are excellent, but they are not guaranteed.
Ha Long Bay is cooler in winter too. Mist can hang over the water, which creates a moody atmosphere but can reduce visibility. A warm layer for the deck is essential on an overnight cruise.
Central Vietnam
The central coast, including Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An, usually has its rainy season from about September to December. By late December and January, conditions often start to improve, but showers, gray skies, and cooler temperatures remain possible. Along the south-central coast, such as Nha Trang, rain can also continue into December.
If your trip includes central Vietnam, build flexibility into the plan. Keep a spare day, choose accommodation with a cancellation option if you can, and treat the beach as a bonus rather than a promise. Hoi An and Hue are still worth visiting in softer weather, since both are about architecture, food, and atmosphere more than sunbathing.
Da Lat and the Central Highlands

Da Lat sits at altitude and stays cooler than the coast all year. December falls in the dry season, so days are generally mild and bright, and nights are cool. It is a good choice for travelers who want comfortable weather without beach heat.
How Christmas is celebrated in Vietnam
Christmas is not a public holiday in Vietnam, so most businesses operate as usual on 25 December. Even so, the country has a significant Catholic community, and the season is visible in the cities. Churches hold services and decorate their grounds, shopping centers and hotels put up lights and trees, and public squares fill with young people taking photos.
Ho Chi Minh City. Central districts light up, and areas around the main cathedral and the Nguyen Hue walking street usually draw crowds in the evenings. Hotels and restaurants often prepare special menus, and rooftop bars offer views of the lit skyline.
Ha Noi. The area around the old cathedral and nearby streets become popular gathering points on Christmas Eve, with cafes and street stalls busy until late. The Old Quarter has its own festive energy, with decorations in shops and restaurants.
Da Lat and other tourist towns. Hotels and resorts often host Christmas dinners and events. If you want a quieter holiday, ask your hotel what it plans ahead of time.
Events change from year to year, so check dates with your hotel or tour operator closer to your trip.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
1 January is a public holiday in Vietnam, although it is a one-day break. The big holiday of the year is Tet, the Lunar New Year, which falls in early February in 2027. For visitors, New Year’s Eve is a lively but low-key affair compared with Tet.
In major cities, countdown events and fireworks are common, and central areas such as lakes, walking streets, and waterfronts fill up. Many hotels, restaurants, and rooftop venues host celebrations. If you want a good view or a table, book early. If you prefer a quieter night, a beach resort, a river cruise, or a homestay offers a gentler alternative.

Three sample itineraries
1. Sun-first itinerary: south Vietnam (7 days)
Best for travelers who want warm weather and low risk of rain.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City. Evening walk around the central districts. |
| 2 | City sights, then a rooftop dinner for Christmas or New Year’s Eve. |
| 3 | Mekong Delta day trip or overnight stay. |
| 4 | Fly to Phu Quoc. Beach afternoon. |
| 5 | Island day: boat trip, snorkeling, or a quiet beach day. |
| 6 | Free day. Spa, sunset, or a cooking class. |
| 7 | Depart. |
2. North to south, with warm layers (10 days)

Best for first-time visitors who want to see several regions.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Ha Noi: Old Quarter, Temple of Literature, and a food walk. |
| 3 | Ninh Binh day trip. |
| 4–5 | Ha Long Bay overnight cruise, then return to Ha Noi and fly south. |
| 6–7 | Hoi An or Hue, with flexible plans in case of rain. |
| 8–9 | Ho Chi Minh City, plus a Mekong Delta or Cu Chi excursion. |
| 10 | Depart. |
Pack layers, including a warm jacket for the north and light clothing for the south. This route is popular with Vietnam top tours because it covers several regions in one trip, but the central section is the weakest in December, so keep it flexible.

Best for families who want simple logistics and good weather.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Ho Chi Minh City: easy sights and short days. |
| 3 | Mekong Delta day trip. |
| 4–7 | Phu Quoc beach resort, with optional boat trips. |
| 8 | Depart. |
What to book early

The Christmas and New Year period is a peak season in much of Vietnam, so it pays to plan ahead.
- Flights. Domestic routes to Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and between the major cities can fill quickly around the holidays.
- Beach resorts. Phu Quoc and other southern resorts are in demand because of the good weather.
- Ha Long Bay cruises. Good boats sell out, especially for departures around 24–25 December and 31 December.
- Special dinners. Hotels and restaurants often offer set menus for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and tables fill up.
- Tours and guides. Popular departures, including many Vietnam top tours, can sell out ahead of the holidays, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
If you plan to travel in late January or February, remember that Tet falls in early February 2027. Many people travel domestically at that time, and some businesses close for several days. It is a fascinating time to be in Vietnam, but it needs separate planning.
Packing for a December trip
- Layers. A light jacket for Ha Noi evenings, a warm layer for Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay, and light clothing for the south.
- A compact rain jacket. Useful for the north and the central coast.
- Swimwear and sunscreen if you are heading to the south or the islands.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Streets in older cities can be uneven.
- A small day bag for temperature changes during the day.
