Overview
Desert dunes, ancient towers, a canyon stream, and a working fishing coast — all within one day of Saigon
Three hours south of Ho Chi Minh City, the landscape changes completely. The flat delta gives way to coastal wind, red cliffs, and hills of white sand that stretch further than feels possible in tropical Vietnam. Mui Ne is one of the most geographically unusual places in Southeast Asia — a narrow strip of coast where sand dunes meet the sea, ancient Cham ruins sit above the bay, and a shallow canyon stream winds between walls of rust-colored sandstone.
This full-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City is built for travelers who want to see it all in one go: the white dunes at their best, the Fairy Stream on foot, the 8th-century Po Shanu towers with views over the bay, a proper seafood lunch, time on the beach, and the fishing village as the day winds down. Small groups of 2–12 people mean the pace is flexible and the experience is shared with people you’ll actually be able to talk to.
Duration: Full day (approx. 11 hours) Departure: Daily from Ho Chi Minh City

Why choose TNK Travel’s Mui Ne tour?
Most Mui Ne day tours from Ho Chi Minh City run on large buses and pack in 20–30 people. This tour keeps groups at 2–12, which changes everything: more flexible timing at each stop, a guide who can actually spend time with you, and no waiting around for a crowd to move. Over 1,000,000 travelers have chosen TNK Travel for their Vietnam experience — and this is one of the tours that shows why.
Tour highlights
White sand dunes (Bau Trang):
- One of the only desert landscapes in Southeast Asia — white sand hills extending to a horizon of lotus lakes and open sky
- Catch the dunes in the late afternoon light when shadows define every ridge and the colors shift from white to gold
- Optional activities: sandboarding down the slopes, ATV or jeep rides across the dunes (extra cost, bookable on the day
Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien):
- Wade barefoot up a shallow stream that cuts through a canyon of rust-red and cream sandstone — one of the most photographed natural sites in southern Vietnam
- The walls change color as you walk deeper, from pale yellow to deep orange depending on the light
- Easy walking, ankle-deep water, suitable for all fitness levels
Po Shanu Cham towers:
- Built in the 8th century by the Cham civilization, these Hindu brick towers dedicated to Lord Shiva are among the best-preserved Cham ruins in southern Vietnam
- Positioned on a hill above Mui Ne Bay — the view from the towers over the coast and town below is one of the trip’s best photography moments
- Your guide explains the Champa kingdom: who they were, how they built without mortar, and why their civilization disappeared
Mui Ne beach & fishing village:
- Time on Mui Ne beach — the wind here is constant (it’s what made Mui Ne famous for kitesurfing), the water is clear, and the coastline extends in both directions with almost no development visible
- The fishing village at the southern end of the bay is one of the most active small-boat fishing communities on the Vietnamese coast — hundreds of round basket boats (thung chai) crowd the shoreline, and the smell of drying fish is everywhere
- Van Thuy Tu Temple: a working Whale God temple that houses an enormous whale skeleton — the largest in Vietnam — and reflects the deep-sea spiritual tradition of coastal fishing communities along this stretch of coast

- Modest attire required at Po Shanu Cham towers and Van Thuy Tu Temple — shoulders and knees should be covered. A light layer or sarong works well given the heat.
- Fairy Stream involves wading through shallow water — remove shoes at the entrance. Sandals or flip-flops are easier than lace-up shoes.
- Beach attire is appropriate for the beach stop and the dunes
Physical requirements
- Moderate level — involves walking, wading (Fairy Stream), and climbing stairs (Po Shanu towers). All activities are manageable for travelers of general fitness.
- The dunes involve walking on soft sand, which takes slightly more effort than flat ground
- Optional dune activities (ATV, sandboarding) are physically more demanding — your guide will brief the group on site
Optional activities (extra cost, payable on the day)
- Sandboarding down the white sand dunes
- ATV or quad bike ride across the dunes
- Jeep ride at the dunes
- Ostrich riding at Fairy Stream
Weather
- Mui Ne is one of the sunniest parts of Vietnam — the area receives significantly less rain than Ho Chi Minh City even during the wet season (May–October)
- Wind is a constant presence on the coast. Bring a light layer for the drive back.
- Tour operates in most weather conditions. If TNK Travel cancels due to severe weather, you receive a full refund or can reschedule.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes that can get wet (for Fairy Stream)
- Swimwear and a small towel for the beach
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — sun exposure at the dunes is intense
- Light modest layer or sarong for temple visits
- Camera
- Cash for optional activities and personal purchases (VND preferred)
Ho Chi Minh - Mui Ne
Your guide meets you at your District 1 hotel. Board your air-conditioned vehicle for the drive south along the coast highway. The route passes through Binh Thuan province — one of Vietnam's driest regions — and the landscape shifts noticeably as you leave the Mekong basin behind. Your guide introduces Mui Ne's geography and what makes it unusual: a narrow coastal strip where prevailing winds from the South China Sea have pushed sand inland for centuries, creating conditions that exist almost nowhere else in Southeast Asia.
09:30 – 10:15 AM Po Shanu Cham towers
First stop on the hill above Mui Ne town — the Po Shanu tower complex, built in the 8th century during the height of the Champa kingdom. The Cham were a Hindu seafaring civilization that dominated the coast of what is now central and southern Vietnam for nearly a thousand years, and these three brick towers are among the southernmost surviving examples of their architecture.
The towers are dedicated to Lord Shiva and constructed using a still-debated technique: the bricks were fired and fitted without mortar, yet have held together through centuries of tropical weather. Your guide explains who the Cham were, how their kingdom declined, and why their legacy is still visible in the language, cuisine, and spiritual life of communities along this coast. The views from the hilltop over Mui Ne Bay are worth the walk up alone.
10:30 – 11:15 AM Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)
Remove your shoes, leave them on the rack at the entrance, and step into the stream. The Fairy Stream is a shallow waterway — rarely deeper than ankle height — that runs between two walls of compressed sandstone in shades of rust, cream, and deep orange. The canyon formed over millennia as the stream cut through the dunes, and the result is one of the most surreal short walks in Vietnam.
Walk upstream for about 30 minutes at a relaxed pace. The walls gradually close in and change color as you go, and the contrast between the cool water underfoot and the warm dry sand above is genuinely pleasant. Optional ostrich riding is available at the stream entrance for those who want it.
12:00 – 01:00 PM Seafood lunch
Lunch at a local seafood restaurant near the waterfront — the kind of place that serves whatever came in that morning. Mui Ne's proximity to rich fishing grounds means the seafood here is consistently fresh: grilled fish, steamed prawns, clams in lemongrass, rice, and vegetables. Your guide will help the group navigate the menu. Lunch is included in your tour price.
01:30 – 02:30 PM Mui Ne beach
An hour of free time on Mui Ne beach before the afternoon activities. The beach here is narrow and windswept — conditions that make it Vietnam's kite surfing capital but also mean the water has a bit of chop. Good for a swim, a walk, or simply sitting in the shade with the sound of the South China Sea.
Your guide is available to point out any recommended spots for coffee or fresh coconut along the beach road. 03:00 – 04:30 PM White sand dunes (Bau Trang)
The afternoon timing at the white dunes is deliberate. Earlier in the day the light is flat; in the mid-to-late afternoon, the low sun casts shadows across every ridge and hollow, and the sand shifts from blinding white to warm gold. The dunes at Bau Trang (White Lake) are the largest in the area — wide open hills of fine white sand with a lotus lake at the base and open sky in every direction.
Optional activities are available here: sandboarding down the slopes, ATV rides, and jeep tours that take you further into the dune field. These are bookable directly on site with your guide's assistance. For those who prefer to simply walk, the dunes themselves are the experience — the scale and silence are unexpectedly moving. 04:45 – 05:15 PM Fishing village & Van Thuy Tu Temple
The Mui Ne fishing village sits at the southern curve of the bay, where hundreds of round wicker basket boats (thung chai) are pulled up onto the beach at the end of each day. These boats — uniquely Vietnamese in design — are used for short-range inshore fishing and have been in continuous use on this coast for centuries. The village is not a tourist attraction; it is a working harbor, busy with nets, engines, and the logistics of a daily catch.
Van Thuy Tu Temple, a short walk from the waterfront, is dedicated to Ca Ong — the Whale God. Coastal fishing communities along this stretch of Vietnam have venerated whales for generations, believing them to be protectors of sailors at sea. The temple houses the largest whale skeleton in Vietnam, assembled from a whale that beached here in the 19th century. Your guide explains the tradition and what it reveals about the relationship between this community and the sea.
05:30 PM Depart for Ho Chi Minh City Board your vehicle for the return journey. The drive back takes approximately 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. Your guide is available for any final questions, or you can simply rest — it has been a long and full day.
06:00 – 06:30 PM Hotel drop-off, District 1

Our commitments
- Small groups, real experience: 2–12 people means no waiting around, more flexibility at each stop, and a guide who can actually spend time with you rather than managing a crowd

- Honest itinerary: Everything listed is included. Optional activities are clearly marked as extra cost — no surprises on the day

Frequently asked questions
How far is Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City?
Mui Ne is approximately 200 km from Ho Chi Minh City — about 2.5 to 3 hours by road via the coastal highway. The new expressway has significantly reduced travel time compared to a few years ago. Your guide will use the journey time to brief the group on what to expect at each stop.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes. The Fairy Stream is shallow and safe for children, the beach stop is family-friendly, and the dunes are genuinely fun for younger travelers — especially with sandboarding. The Cham towers involve a short climb up stairs; the temple visits require respectful behavior but are not lengthy. Children under 4 travel free, and children 4–11 receive a 25% discount.
Is Mui Ne suitable for travelers who’ve already been to the Sahara or other desert destinations?
The white sand dunes at Bau Trang are not the Sahara — they’re a coastal dune system unique to this part of Vietnam, surrounded by lotus lakes and sea breeze. Travelers who’ve seen larger desert landscapes often find them surprisingly different and worth visiting on those terms. The combination with the canyon stream, the ancient ruins, and the working fishing harbor makes it a full day rather than just a dune visit.
What is the best time of year to visit Mui Ne?
Mui Ne is one of the driest places in Vietnam and remains sunny and accessible year-round. The dry season runs roughly November to April, with cooler temperatures and minimal rain. May to October brings slightly more humidity and occasional afternoon showers, but the area receives far less rainfall than Ho Chi Minh City and tours operate throughout. Wind is present year-round — which kitesurfers love and most visitors find refreshing.
Can I go swimming at Mui Ne beach?
Yes. The beach stop includes free time for swimming. The sea here has more wave action than calmer beaches further north, and wind is constant, but the water is clean and the swimming is pleasant. Bring your swimwear and a small towel as they are not provided.
What optional activities should I book in advance?
None need to be booked in advance — all optional activities (sandboarding, ATV rides, jeep tours, ostrich riding) are available directly on site and can be arranged with your guide’s help on the day. Costs are paid in cash at each activity point. Your guide will give you current pricing and honest recommendations based on the group’s interests.
Is this tour suitable for travelers with limited mobility?
The Fairy Stream and the Cham tower stairs may be challenging for travelers with limited mobility. The beach, dune viewing area, fishing village, and temple visits are more accessible. Please contact us before booking and we can advise on which stops can be adapted.
