Cu Chi Tunnels & Mekong Delta — luxury group tour by limousine

Tour snapshot

Tour code:
LX CMK
Length:
1 day

Overview

Two of Southern Vietnam’s most visited sites in one day, without the highway minibus — Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning, the Mekong Delta in the afternoon, in a luxury limousine shared with a maximum of 6 other guests.

This tour covers the same ground as the standard Cu Chi and Mekong combination, but the way you travel is different. Instead of a shared minivan, the vehicle is a Ford Limousine or Dcar — a stretched, full-height cabin with reclining leather seats, USB charging, and cold drinks. The extra space and comfort matter on a 12-hour day that involves two long highway transfers.

The morning goes to Bến Đình, the Cu Chi Tunnels site that’s right on the Saigon River and closest to the wartime tunnel network. The guide leads the group through the documentary, the jungle path, the concealed trapdoors, and the optional crawl section. The afternoon is on the water in My Tho — a motorboat on the Tiền River, then a rowing sampan into the narrow canals. Along the way: a live đòn ca tài tử performance, honey tasting direct from the hive, coconut candy made the old way, and a tasting of fresh tropical fruit.

The group size is capped at 7 passengers, so the limousine never feels crowded and the guide can actually talk to everyone. You travel with a small number of other guests — not a busload.

Why TNK Travel for this tour

  • The limousine makes a real difference: a 12-hour day with two 1.5-hour highway transfers is tiring in a regular minibus. The limousine has full reclining seats, proper headroom, and is genuinely comfortable. It’s not just a label.
  • Bến Đình — the right tunnel site for this route: Bến Đình is the main Cu Chi site and is directly accessible from the Saigon River side, which fits the morning schedule. The guide arrives before the main bus group wave.
  • Đòn ca tài tử live on the island: this is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2013 — Southern Vietnamese chamber music performed by local musicians in the delta, not a stage show. Hearing it on a riverside island in My Tho is the right context.
  • Maximum 7 guests per departure: the limousine and guide are shared with a small group, but the experience at each site is far more personal than a standard bus tour. The guide has time for actual conversation.
  • Trusted operator since 2000: TNK Travel is ranked #3 on TripAdvisor with over 24,000 verified reviews.

Tour highlights

  • Luxury limousine both ways: Ford Limousine or Dcar with leather reclining seats, USB charging, cold drinks, and a professional driver. Not a minibus relabelled.
  • Củ Chi Tunnels — Bến Đình: the main Cu Chi historical site. Wartime documentary, concealed trapdoor entrances, booby trap displays, bomb craters, and an optional tunnel crawl. Cassava and tea tasting included.
  • Đòn ca tài tử — live Southern Vietnamese folk music: a traditional performance by local musicians on a riverside island in My Tho. UNESCO-listed since 2013. Part of the boat stop, not an add-on.
  • Honey tasting direct from the hive: a working bee farm on one of the Tiền River islands. The keeper lifts the frame from the hive and you taste the honey on-site.
  • Coconut candy workshop: a small family operation making kẹo dừa (coconut candy) by hand. You watch the full process — cracking, pressing, boiling, moulding — and taste the finished product.
  • Sampan rowing through the canals: narrow wooden boats rowed by local oarsmen through palm-shaded waterways too small for motorboats. The quietest and most photogenic part of the day.
  • Lunch en route to My Tho: a local Vietnamese restaurant on the road south from Cu Chi. Set menu with shared plates using whatever is fresh from the market that day.

Important information

Pickup & the limousine

  • Hotel pickup in Ho Chi Minh City, District 1 (excluding Đa Kao and Tân Định wards). Pickup between 7:00 and 7:20 AM — exact time confirmed by WhatsApp or email 24 hours before departure.
  • For hotels outside the pickup zone: meet at TNK Travel, 112 Trần Hưng Đạo Street, District 1 by 7:00 AM.
  • The limousine is a Ford Limousine or Dcar (or equivalent premium vehicle) — a full-size high-roof vehicle with reclining individual leather seats, USB charging ports, and cold water. The vehicle seats up to 7 guests per departure. You share the limousine with a small group of other travellers, not a full-size bus.

Củ Chi Tunnels — physical requirements

  • The tunnel crawl is optional. Guests with claustrophobia, back problems, or limited mobility can observe from above ground and receive the full guide explanation.
  • The site involves approximately 1–1.5 km of walking on jungle paths with uneven ground. Closed-toe shoes are recommended — sandals are not suitable.
  • Not recommended for guests with serious mobility limitations or recent back/joint injuries.

Mekong Delta boat activities

  • The motorboat trip covers the main Tiền River channel between My Tho and the four islands (Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, Tortoise).
  • The sampan section is in narrow canals under palm canopy — calm water, no waves, suitable for all ages including children.
  • The island activities (honey farm, coconut candy, đòn ca tài tử) are on solid ground with short walks between stops.

What to wear and bring

  • Closed-toe shoes for the Củ Chi jungle paths
  • Light, breathable clothing
  • Hat and sunscreen for open-air boat sections
  • Insect repellent (useful at both sites)
  • Camera — the sampan canals and honey farm are particularly photogenic
  • Small amount of VND or USD for the optional shooting range at Củ Chi and personal purchases

Weather

  • The tour operates year-round. The limousine is fully air-conditioned. Boat sections are outdoors — a light rain layer is useful in the wet season (May–October).
  • If TNK cancels due to severe weather, guests receive a full refund or the option to reschedule.

Itinerary

Day 0

HCM - Mekong Delta - HCM

7:00–7:20 AM Limousine pickup — Ho Chi Minh City, District 1

The limousine and guide collect the group from your hotel. Please be ready in the lobby at 7:00 AM. The vehicle is waiting outside — the guide will meet you at the door. Cold water and small snacks are available on board for the drive.

The route heads northwest on Highway 22 toward Củ Chi District. Your guide uses the 1–1.5 hour transfer to introduce the history of the Cu Chi tunnel network: why it was built, how it functioned, who lived inside it, and what the fighting in this district looked like from both sides. The guide also explains what you’ll see at Bến Đình and what to expect at each stop.

8:30 AM Arrival at Củ Chi Tunnels — Bến Đình

The limousine drops the group at the Bến Đình entrance. Bến Đình is the main Cu Chi Tunnels historical site, located on the Saigon River side of the district. The site is well-maintained and covers the full wartime tunnel programme.

8:40 AM Wartime documentary

A short documentary (~20 minutes) filmed during and after the war. It covers the construction of the tunnel network from the late 1940s through the American War, daily underground life, and the military campaign in Cu Chi. The guide adds context throughout.

9:05 AM Guided exploration — tunnel entrances, traps & optional crawl

The guide leads the group through the site on foot:
• Concealed trapdoor entrances in the jungle floor — the guide demonstrates how they open and close from below
• Booby trap displays — inert reconstructions of the above-ground defensive traps used against patrols
• Bomb craters left by B-52 strikes, still visible in the jungle floor
• Underground sections — kitchens, meeting rooms, and storage areas at tunnel height
• Optional tunnel crawl — a widened section of the original tunnel, dark and low. Fully optional.
• Cassava and hot tea tasting — the wartime staple of the underground community

10:30 AM Optional shooting range

An operational shooting range at the site offers AK-47, M-16, and other period weapons. Approximately $1–2 USD per bullet, minimum 10 bullets, payable on site. Guests who skip can wait at the vehicle.

11:00 AM Depart Củ Chi — drive south to My Tho

The group returns to the limousine for the drive south to My Tho in Tiền Giang Province. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. The guide introduces the Mekong Delta along the way: the river system, the four main Tiền River islands (Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise), and the đòn ca tài tử music tradition that originated in the delta.

12:00 PM Lunch — local restaurant en route to My Tho

Lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant on the road down from Cu Chi, before reaching My Tho. The kitchen serves a set menu of shared plates using fresh market ingredients. Vegetarian alternatives available if requested at booking. Approximately 45–60 minutes.

1:30 PM Boat departure — motorboat on the Tiền River

The group boards a motorboat from the My Tho pier. The boat heads out onto the Tiền River — one of the main branches of the Mekong — and crosses to the islands. From the river, the scale of the waterway is immediately clear: the Tiền is wide, busy with cargo boats and ferries, and the palm-lined islands sit low on the water. The guide points out the different types of vessels and explains how river transport still dominates the local economy despite the expansion of road networks.

2:00 PM Island stop 1 — Bee farm & honey tasting

The first island stop is a working bee farm. The keeper opens one of the hive frames and holds it up for the group — bees, comb, and raw honey visible at close range. Honey is tasted directly from the comb, and honeyed tea is served. The keeper explains how the bees feed on nhãn (longan) and coconut flowers, which gives the honey a mild, floral flavour different from standard commercial honey.

2:45 PM Đòn ca tài tử — live performance

Đòn ca tài tử (Southern Vietnamese amateur chamber music) is a UNESCO-listed musical tradition that originated in the Mekong Delta in the 19th century. A small group of local musicians performs on traditional instruments — đàn kìm (moon lute), đàn tranh (zither), đàn cò (fiddle), and percussion — while a singer performs in the regional style. The music is quiet, conversational, and very different from the performed folk music at larger tourist venues. Your guide explains the lyrics and the tradition while the performance continues. This is the correct cultural context for this music: a shaded riverside pavilion in the delta where the tradition was born.

3:30 PM Coconut candy workshop & fruit tasting

A visit to a small family operation making kẹo dừa (coconut candy) by hand. The process is visible from start to finish: green coconuts are cracked and pressed for their water and milk, the liquid is boiled down in a large wok with palm sugar until it thickens, then poured onto a flat surface, rolled, cut into strips, and wrapped. The family makes several flavours — plain, pandan, durian, and chocolate — and hands out samples at each stage. You can buy directly from the family.

Tropical fruit tasting follows in the same compound: whatever is in season from the island orchard that day. The guide explains what each fruit is and how it’s grown in the delta.

4:15 PM Sampan through the palm canals

The last water activity is the sampan — a narrow, flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed by a local oarswoman or oarsman through the smaller canals that thread between the islands under a continuous canopy of water coconut palms (dừa nước). The canal is too narrow for the motorboat; the sampan fits with a few centimetres to spare on each side. The overhead canopy blocks the sun completely. The sound is the paddle and the birds. This is the most photographed part of the day and deservedly so.

5:00 PM Return motorboat to My Tho pier

The motorboat collects the group from the island and returns to the My Tho pier.

5:15 PM Return limousine to Ho Chi Minh City

The group boards the limousine for the drive back to Ho Chi Minh City. Cold drinks and light snacks are available on board. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours depending on traffic.

6:30–7:30 PM Hotel drop-off — end of tour

Drop-off at your hotel in District 1. End of tour.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is đòn ca tài tử and why is it significant?

Đòn ca tài tử (literally ‘playing instruments and singing’) is a form of Southern Vietnamese chamber music that developed in the Mekong Delta in the late 19th century. It is performed by a small group of amateur musicians — ‘amateur’ in the original sense of people who play for love of the music rather than commercial performance. UNESCO added it to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013, recognising it as one of the defining cultural expressions of Southern Vietnam. The music is conversational and improvised in feel, the lyrics often poetic or romantic, and the instruments — moon lute, zither, two-stringed fiddle, and percussion — are the same instruments used in Vietnamese classical music but played in a more relaxed, personal style. Hearing it on a riverside island in My Tho, where the tradition is still practised by locals rather than staged for tourists, is a genuinely different experience.

What is the difference between Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc at Củ Chi?

Both are sections of the same wartime tunnel network, but they are separate sites in different parts of Cu Chi District. Bến Đình is the main, closer section — better maintained, with the full range of tunnel features, and directly accessible from the Saigon River approach from Ho Chi Minh City. Bến Dược is larger, further from the city, receives fewer visitors, and includes the Ben Duoc Martyrs’ Temple. This tour visits Bến Đình, which is the correct site for the morning schedule and the overall day route.

What is the limousine like exactly?

The vehicle used for this tour is a Ford Limousine or Dcar — a commercial-grade stretched vehicle with a high roof, individual reclining leather seats (not bench seating), USB charging at each seat, and a small drinks cooler. It is the same category of vehicle used for VIP airport transfers and premium group tours in Vietnam. The interior is clean, fully air-conditioned, and significantly more comfortable than a standard 16-seat minibus for a 12-hour day. Group size is matched to the vehicle so there are no crowded rows.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. The limousine is comfortable for children on long transfers. At Củ Chi, the documentary contains wartime footage that parents may want to consider for very young children — stepping outside is fine. The tunnel crawl is optional. The Mekong activities — the bee farm, the music performance, the coconut candy, the sampan ride — are all engaging for children of different ages. The monkeys and crocodiles of Can Gio are not part of this tour; the Mekong section here is focused on craft, food, and water. Children under 4 travel free; children 4–10 pay 75% of the adult rate.

Can we combine this with something else in Ho Chi Minh City?

This tour fills a full day from approximately 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. There is no realistic time for a separate morning or evening activity on the same day. If you want to add Saigon city highlights, TNK offers a private city tour that can be done on a separate day, or the PGT-CTCC tour which combines city highlights with Cu Chi in a single day by road.

What if one person in the group doesn’t want to do the tunnel crawl?

No problem at all. The tunnel crawl is entirely optional. At the crawl entrance, guests who prefer to skip simply walk around to the exit and wait. The guide provides the full explanation of the tunnel dimensions, the crawl experience, and the wartime context to the whole group above ground before anyone enters. Guests who skip miss nothing in terms of information — only the physical experience of being inside.
