Overview

My Tho and Ben Tre in a day: Mekong River cruise, island workshops, sampan canals, and cycling through Tan Thach village.

This is TNK Travel’s standard Mekong Delta day tour from Ho Chi Minh City, running daily to My Tho in Tiền Giang Province and Ben Tre. The route is 70 kilometres each way and the day runs from morning pickup to late afternoon drop-off, covering a pagoda, a motorboat cruise on the Mekong River past the four islands, a set of small workshops and farms on the islands, lunch, a sampan ride through narrow palm-shaded canals, and a cycling loop through Tan Thach village.

The day is structured around movement between two provinces, mostly by boat. After the pagoda visit in My Tho, the group is on the river — motorboat out to the islands, then the slow transition to the hand-rowed sampan through the interior canals. The cycling through Tan Thach comes in the mid-afternoon and covers a working village at a pace that lets you actually see it rather than passing through it.

Two group options: an English-language small group (2–12 people) and a Chinese-language big group (2–25 people). The itinerary is the same with one difference: the small group includes a bicycle for the Tan Thach section; the big group does a guided walking tour of the same area. Small group guests who prefer not to cycle can walk or rest in hammocks.

Why TNK Travel for this tour

Daily departures: the tour runs every day of the year including public holidays (holiday pricing applies on the dates listed in the price section).

English and Chinese: both languages available on the same daily schedule. Specify your preference at booking.

Small group maximum 12: the English small group keeps group size at 12 or fewer, which makes a practical difference on the sampan boats, at the workshop stops, and when cycling through the village.

Cycling included, not an add-on: the bicycle for Tan Thach village is included in the small group price. Walking or hammock rest are available if you prefer.

All activities included: motorboat cruise, sampan ride, workshops, cycling, fruit and honey tasting, folk music performance, and lunch — all in the tour price, no surprises.

Trusted operator since 2000: TNK Travel is ranked #3 on TripAdvisor with over 24,000 verified reviews.

Tour highlights

Vinh Trang Pagoda: a 19th-century Buddhist pagoda in My Tho, unusual for the way it combines Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, and French colonial architectural elements across the same compound. The decorative gates, garden layout, and ceramic tile mosaics each reference a different tradition. The pagoda is active — monks are present during daytime hours — and the visit takes about 30 minutes. It sets the historical and cultural context for the delta before the river section begins.

Mekong River motorboat cruise: from the My Tho pier, the group boards a traditional motorboat and heads out on the Mekong. The river here is wide and busy with working traffic. The boat passes the four islands — Dragon (Cồn Rồng), Unicorn (Cồn Lân), Phoenix (Cồn Phụng), and Tortoise (Cồn Quải) — before docking at the first island for the workshop and farm stops.

Đờ́n ca tài tứ folk music: a live performance in a family home or riverside pavilion on the island. Local musicians play traditional southern Vietnamese instruments — the đàn bầu (monochord zither), đàn kìm (moon lute), đàn cò (two-stringed fiddle) — and sing. UNESCO recognised đờ́n ca tài tứ as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. The performance is informal and lasts about 20 minutes; your guide translates and explains as you listen.

Tropical fruit tasting & honey tea: fresh fruit from the island orchards — longan, rambutan, jackfruit, starfruit, and others depending on the season — served with honey tea made from local bee farm honey. Your guide explains what is in season and where each fruit comes from.

Bee farm visit: a working honey bee farm run by a local family. The visit covers hive structure, traditional harvesting methods, and the farm’s products. Tasting included. The family explains their approach in a direct, practical way — this is a functional visit, not a staged demonstration.

Coconut candy workshop: Ben Tre produces most of Vietnam’s coconut output and coconut candy is one of its most recognised products. The workshop covers the full process from raw coconut to finished candy. Guests can participate in stirring, cutting, and wrapping. Finished products available to purchase.

Vietnamese lunch: a set menu at a riverside restaurant. Typical dishes: elephant ear fish (cá tai tượng) fried whole and served with rice paper and herbs for wrapping, crispy spring rolls (chả giò), stir-fried seasonal vegetables, steamed rice, soup, and fresh fruit. Vegetarian options available if requested at booking.

Hand-rowed sampan ride: after lunch, the group moves to the sampan dock. Narrow wooden boats carry three to four guests each, rowed by local boatwomen through interior canals too narrow for the motorboat. The canals run under a continuous canopy of coconut palms. The ride covers about two kilometres and takes 30–40 minutes. This is consistently the activity guests mention most in reviews.

Cycling through Tan Thach village (small group only): Tan Thach’s lanes are flat, shaded, and used mainly by locals. The cycling route runs through fruit orchards and past traditional wooden houses, taking about 45–60 minutes at a relaxed pace. Bicycles are provided. Guests who prefer not to cycle can walk or rest in hammocks at the orchard. Big group guests do a guided walking tour of the same area.

Itinerary

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City → My Tho → Ben Tre → Ho Chi Minh City

7:00–8:00 AM Hotel pickup
Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby in District 1. The vehicle departs for My Tho, approximately 70 kilometres south. The drive takes about 90 minutes on the highway through Tiền Giang Province. The landscape shifts gradually from urban outskirts to rice paddies, fruit orchards, and roadside markets as you leave the city behind. Your guide introduces the day and provides background on the Mekong Delta — the river system, the provinces, and what distinguishes delta life from city life.

9:00–9:30 AM Vinh Trang Pagoda, My Tho
Vinh Trang Pagoda (Chùa Vĩnh Tràng) is one of the largest Buddhist pagodas in the Mekong Delta, founded in the early 19th century and expanded with contributions from local and overseas Chinese communities. The compound is architecturally unusual: Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, and French colonial elements appear across the same grounds without any particular attempt to reconcile them. The decorative gates reference French facades; the exterior tile mosaics are Khmer; the main hall follows Vietnamese Buddhist proportions; the garden is laid out in a Chinese tradition with ornamental trees and stone carvings.
The pagoda is active and monks are present during daytime hours. The visit takes about 30 minutes and provides a useful grounding in the cultural mix of the delta before the river section of the day begins.

10:00–11:30 AM Mekong River motorboat cruise — island workshops
From the My Tho pier, the group boards a traditional motorboat for the river cruise. The Mekong here is wide and busy with working boat traffic. The motorboat heads toward the four islands — Dragon (Cồn Rồng), Unicorn (Cồn Lân), Phoenix (Cồn Phụng), and Tortoise (Cồn Quải) — before docking at the first island for the workshop and farm stops, which run in sequence:
• Đờ́n ca tài tứ folk music performance: local musicians play traditional southern Vietnamese instruments in a family home or riverside pavilion. Your guide translates and explains as the performance unfolds. About 20 minutes.
• Tropical fruit tasting: fresh seasonal fruit from the island orchards served with honey tea. Your guide explains each fruit and where it grows.
• Bee farm visit: a working family honey farm. Traditional harvesting method demonstrated, tasting included.
• Coconut candy workshop: hands-on demonstration of the full candy-making process. Guests can participate. Finished products available to purchase.

11:30 AM–1:00 PM Lunch
Lunch at a riverside restaurant. The set menu features Mekong Delta dishes: elephant ear fish (cá tai tượng) fried whole and served with rice paper, herbs, and dipping sauce for wrapping; crispy spring rolls (chả giò); stir-fried morning glory; steamed rice; soup; and fresh fruit. Vegetarian alternatives available if requested at booking.

1:00–2:00 PM Hand-rowed sampan through the canals
After lunch the group moves to the sampan dock. Narrow wooden boats carry three to four guests each, rowed by local boatwomen through interior canals too narrow for the motorboat. The canals run beneath a continuous arch of coconut palms. The pace is slow and the water is calm. The route passes stilted houses, small vegetable plots, and fishing nets strung across narrower channels. About two kilometres, 30–40 minutes. The sampan ride is consistently the activity guests mention most in reviews.

2:00–3:00 PM Cycling through Tan Thach village (small group) — or walking tour (big group)
Small group: bicycles are provided and the group cycles through Tan Thach village in Ben Tre. The route is flat and shaded, passing through fruit orchards and alongside traditional wooden houses at a relaxed pace — about 45–60 minutes. The village is not a tourist attraction; people are going about their day and the group moves through without disrupting it.
Guests who prefer not to cycle can walk alongside the group or stay at the orchard and rest in hammocks. Your guide accommodates either without issue — just let them know before the section begins.
Big group: a guided walking tour of the same village area, approximately 30–40 minutes.

3:00 PM Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City
The vehicle departs Ben Tre. The drive back takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic.

4:30–5:00 PM Hotel drop-off — end of tour
Drop-off at your hotel in District 1.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the small group and big group options?

The itinerary is identical with one practical difference: the English small group (2–12 people) includes a bicycle for the Tan Thach village section; the Chinese big group (2–25 people) does a guided walking tour of the same area instead. Small group guests who prefer not to cycle can walk or rest in hammocks — there is no obligation. The small group travels by minivan; the big group by coach.

Is the cycling difficult? Do I have to do it?

The route through Tan Thach village is flat and done at a relaxed pace. It is suitable for most adults and older children who can ride a bicycle. If you prefer not to cycle, you can walk with the group or stay at the farm and rest in hammocks until the group returns. Your guide will accommodate either — just let them know before the section begins.

What is đờ́n ca tài tứ?

Đờ́n ca tài tứ is the traditional folk music of southern Vietnam, developed in the Mekong Delta in the late 19th century. It combines vocal performance with traditional string and wind instruments. UNESCO recognised it as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. On this tour, local musicians from the community perform in a family home or riverside pavilion. The performance is informal and your guide explains the instruments and translates lyrics as you listen.

What is the elephant ear fish?

Cá tai tượng is the giant gourami, a large freshwater fish common in the Mekong Delta. It is fried whole in hot oil, which causes the scales to flare out — hence the name. The fish is brought to the table upright and guests wrap pieces of the flesh in rice paper with herbs, cucumber, and bean sprouts, dipping the roll in fish sauce. The presentation is as memorable as the dish. Vegetarian guests are served alternative dishes.

Can vegetarians join this tour?

Yes. Please indicate dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, halal, or allergies — at booking. The lunch restaurant can prepare vegetarian alternatives. The fruit tasting, honey tasting, and coconut candy are naturally vegetarian.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. Children under 4 travel free. Children aged 4–10 pay 75% of the adult rate. The boat rides, fruit tasting, and cycling are generally popular with children. The sampan boats sit low in the water and require careful boarding — your guide assists with young children. Let TNK know the ages of children in your group at booking.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Year-round. The dry season (November–April) offers more comfortable temperatures. The wet season (May–October) brings higher water in the canals — which makes the sampan ride feel more open — and the orchards are often more productive. Both seasons work well. If you are concerned about rain, bring a light raincoat regardless of when you travel.

How does this compare to TNK’s other Mekong Delta tours?

MK1 is the standard one-day Mekong Delta tour covering My Tho and Ben Tre. For more time in the delta, the 2-day tour (GT-MK2) adds Cai Rang floating market and overnight Can Tho. The Ben Luc tours (BL1, BL2) go to a different, less-visited area closer to Ho Chi Minh City. The 3-day tour (MK3) extends to Chau Doc with an optional speed boat connection to Phnom Penh. The Cu Chi & Mekong eco trip (LX-CCBL) combines Cu Chi Tunnels with a Ben Luc farm visit in a single day.
