Overview

Two days is how long the Mekong Delta actually takes

A day trip to the Mekong Delta is a glimpse. Two days is an immersion. This overnight tour covers both the upper and lower delta — from the waterways of Cai Be and Tan Phong Island on Day 1, to the early-morning energy of Cai Rang floating market and the community-led experiences of Con Son Island on Day 2.

You’ll sleep in Can Tho, the delta’s largest city, and wake up early enough to see Cai Rang floating market the way it’s meant to be seen — before the sun is fully up and the trading boats are still thick on the water. Along the way: traditional craft workshops, a community-run island, folk cake making, a Khmer pagoda, folk music, and meals cooked and eaten the way locals eat them.

Why choose TNK Travel’s Mekong Delta 2-day tour?

Two days means you reach places a day trip never can. The lower delta — Can Tho, Cai Rang, the Khmer communities of the deep south, and the community-run Con Son Island — is a different world from the upper delta around Cai Be. This tour covers both, with an overnight in Can Tho that gives you a free evening to explore the riverside night market on your own terms. Over 1,000,000 travelers have trusted TNK Travel for their Vietnam journey — and this tour is one of our most complete Mekong experiences.

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City - Cai Be - Can Tho

07:30 – 08:00 AM Hotel pickup

Your English-speaking guide meets you at your hotel in central District 1. Board your comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for the drive south via the Trung Luong Expressway. As the city gives way to open countryside, your guide introduces the Mekong Delta — the "Nine Dragon River," the geography of a region shaped entirely by water, and what makes the upper and lower delta so different from each other.

10:00 – 10:30 AM Arrival at Cai Be & boat boarding

Arrive at Cai Be pier and board your traditional wooden boat. The pace shifts immediately — slower, greener, quieter.

10:30 – 11:30 AM Tien River cruise & Cai Be waterfront

Cruise along the Tien River through the heart of Cai Be's riverside community. Cai Be once hosted one of the Mekong's most active floating markets; improved roads have shifted much of the wholesale trade ashore over the years. What remains is something more honest — fishing boats heading out for the morning, families crossing between islands by sampan, a few vendors still trading the old way on the water.

The French Gothic cathedral of Cai Be rises above the riverbank in one of the most photographed scenes in the entire Mekong Delta. Your guide shares the history of river commerce in the delta and how communities here are navigating change while holding onto what matters.

11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Ancient House visit

Dock at the riverbank and step inside a preserved Vietnamese house, over 100 years old. Hand-carved timber, antique furnishings, open courtyards, and a family altar that has seen generations come and go. Your guide walks you through the architecture, the values embedded in the home's design, and what daily life looked like for a prosperous Mekong family a century ago.

12:00 – 12:30 PM Traditional craft workshops

Visit working cottage industries that supply local markets — not tourist demonstrations: •
Coconut candy: Fresh coconut milk and palm sugar slow-cooked over a wood fire, then stretched and cut by hand. Taste it hot. •
Crispy rice popcorn: Sticky rice puffed into light, airy snacks using a traditional technique. Sample straight from the pan.

12:30 – 01:00 PM Folk music & boat transfer to Tan Phong Island

Settle in for a short live performance of đờn ca tài tử — Southern Vietnamese chamber folk music on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Then back on the water for a short cruise to Tan Phong Island through narrowing, palm-canopied channels.

01:00 – 02:30 PM Hands-On Cooking Class

Arrive at a local family home on Tan Phong Island. Start in the garden picking fresh herbs — Vietnamese coriander, basil, lemongrass, whatever the season offers. Your host — typically the family's main cook — walks you through 2–3 traditional dishes with your guide translating: fresh spring rolls (gỏi cuốn), a fried version (chả giò), and one Mekong specialty. You learn the technique, the herb logic, and the sauce from scratch.

02:30 – 03:30 PM Lunch & Village Exploration

Eat what you made, alongside dishes from the host family. Then explore the island: •
Sampan ride (approx. 30 min): A local rower takes you through back canals too narrow for any motor. Coconut palms overhead, stilted houses on both sides. •
Cycling or walking (15–20 min): Flat village paths through fruit orchards and past family homes. Go at your own pace.

04:00 PM Depart for Can Tho

Board your vehicle for the 1.5-hour drive to Can Tho, the capital of the Mekong Delta.

05:30 – 06:00 PM Check In — Can Tho Hotel

Check in to your selected 3-star or 4-star hotel in the city center. The rest of the evening is entirely yours. Can Tho's night market and riverside promenade are a short walk away — ideal for a bowl of bún mắm, a Vietnamese iced coffee, or just a slow stroll by the river. Dinner and evening activities are at your own expense and discretion.
Day 2

Can Tho - Cai Rang Floating Market - Ho Chi Minh City

05:30 – 06:00 AM Early Morning Wake-Up

Cai Rang floating market is at its best before sunrise. Your guide meets you at the hotel lobby for the short transfer to the boat pier.

06:00 – 07:30 AM Cai Rang Floating Market

Board your boat for the early morning cruise to Cai Rang — the largest wholesale floating market in the Mekong Delta and one of the last of its kind still operating at genuine commercial scale. Unlike many delta markets that have quieted with urbanization, Cai Rang remains a working wholesale hub: large supplier boats anchor in the river while smaller retail vessels pull alongside to buy and redistribute goods to surrounding villages and towns.

At this hour the market is in full motion — engine sounds, bargaining calls, the smell of river water and ripe fruit. Sample fresh fruit bought directly from a vendor, or try Vietnamese coffee prepared onboard by a floating café. Your guide explains how Cai Rang has survived as a genuine trading market when others have not, and what the future of water-based commerce looks like in the delta.

08:00 – 08:30 AM Hotel Return & Breakfast

Return to the hotel for breakfast and check-out.

09:30 AM Boat Transfer to Con Son Island

Board a traditional flat-bottom boat (thuyền bè) for the short river crossing to Con Son — a quiet, lush island in the middle of the Hậu River that has become one of the Mekong Delta's most genuine community-based tourism destinations. The island is not run by a tourism company but by the local residents themselves, who have come together to open their homes, orchards, and kitchens to visitors. Everything here is family-operated and community-linked.

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Con Son Island — Community Experiences

Step ashore and spend the morning in the hands of the island's residents: •
Traditional folk cake making (bánh dân gian): Join a local family in their home kitchen and learn to make one or two of the Mekong Delta's traditional handmade cakes — recipes passed down through generations and rarely found outside a family setting. •
Cốm nổ (puffed rice) making: Watch and participate in the making of crispy puffed rice over an open flame using a traditional hand-cranked technique. Part snack, part spectacle — sample it warm. •
Fruit orchard walk: Wander through the family orchards covering the island — mango, longan, pomelo, star apple, jackfruit, and more depending on the season. Taste what's ripe directly from the tree.

12:00 – 01:00 PM Lunch at a Local Home

Sit down for lunch prepared by the island family — a spread of home-cooked Mekong dishes using ingredients from the garden and the river. Simple, fresh, and entirely genuine.

01:30 PM Return Boat to Can Tho & Depart for Ho Chi Minh City

Board your vehicle for the return journey via the expressway. Your guide is happy to answer questions, share recommendations for further Mekong exploration, or simply let you rest.

05:30 – 06:00 PM Hotel Drop-Off, District 1

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the 2-day tour different from a day trip to the Mekong Delta?

The 2-day tour covers both the upper delta (Cai Be, Tan Phong Island) and the lower delta (Can Tho, Cai Rang, Con Son Island) — two distinct regions with different landscapes, communities, and experiences. A day trip can only reach one. The overnight stay also gives you free evening time in Can Tho to explore independently.

Is Cai Rang floating market still active?

Yes — Cai Rang is one of the few Mekong Delta floating markets still operating as a genuine wholesale hub. Unlike Cai Be and some other markets that have quieted with urbanization, Cai Rang sees genuine commercial boat traffic every morning. Visiting at dawn (around 6:00 AM) gives you the most authentic experience.

What is Con Son Island?

Con Son is a small, lush island on the Hậu River near Can Tho, known for its community-based tourism model. Rather than being developed by an outside operator, the island’s residents themselves run all the activities — cooking demonstrations, orchard walks, home-cooked meals. It’s one of the few places in the delta where the tourism experience is genuinely community-owned.

What hotel will I stay in?

You’ll stay one night in a 3-star or 4-star hotel in Can Tho city center, depending on the option you choose at booking. Both are centrally located near the night market and riverside promenade. Single supplement is available for solo travelers who prefer a private room.

Can vegetarians join this tour?

Absolutely. Please inform us when booking and we’ll arrange appropriate meals throughout the tour. Vietnamese cuisine has excellent vegetarian options and our cooking instructors are experienced with various dietary needs.

Is the cycling on Day 1 difficult?

Not at all. Village cycling on Tan Phong Island is flat, easy, and suitable for all ages. If you prefer not to cycle, you can walk at your own pace instead — the option is always flexible.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

The tour operates year-round and departs daily. The dry season (November to April) offers the most comfortable weather. The wet season (May to October) brings lush greenery and higher water levels in the canals, which creates its own atmosphere on the water.
