Overview

One of Ho Chi Minh City’s best evenings: Vietnam’s most acclaimed stage show followed by a dinner cruise along the lit-up Saigon River — all in a single private tour from your hotel.

A O Show is the production that put Vietnamese contemporary circus on the international map. Created by Lune Productions — the same company behind Palao in Ha Noi and Teh Dar in Hoi An — A O has played to sold-out theatres in Ho Chi Minh City continuously since 2013 and has toured internationally to France, Australia, and the United States. The show runs without spoken dialogue: it tells the story of Vietnamese rural and urban life through acrobatics, bamboo circus, contemporary dance, and live music. The performers are graduates of the Vietnam School of Circus Arts. The production values are genuinely world-class — lighting, staging, and choreography that would hold its own in any major performance venue. For visitors who have seen circus or contemporary dance productions before, this is not a tourist show. For visitors who haven’t, it is still an excellent introduction.

After the show, the tour continues by vehicle to the Saigon River pier, where a dinner cruise runs for approximately two hours. Two options are available: a standard cruise or a luxury cruise. Both cover the same Saigon River route.

The tour runs as a private booking — your group has a dedicated vehicle and guide from hotel pickup to drop-off. The A O Show tickets and cruise are shared with other audience members in the theatre and on the boat (as with any public performance and cruise), but your transfers and guide are exclusively for you.

Why book through TNK

Tickets and cruise combined in one booking: A O Show tickets, cruise boarding, and hotel transfers are all arranged by TNK. You arrive at the theatre, watch the show, board the cruise, and return to your hotel. No separate bookings to manage.

Private vehicle and guide: the driver and guide are with your group from pickup to drop-off. No waiting for a shared shuttle. The guide is available if you have questions about the show or the river.

Two cruise options at different price points: Option A (standard cruise) and Option B (luxury cruise). TNK can advise which suits your group’s preferences and budget.

Flexible booking: the tour runs daily. Let TNK know your preferred date and group size — TNK confirms availability and secures the tickets.

Trusted operator since 2000: TNK Travel is ranked #3 on TripAdvisor with over 24,000 verified reviews.

Tour highlights

A O Show — Vietnam’s most awarded stage production: acrobatics with bamboo poles, aerial silks, contemporary dance, and live southern Vietnamese music. No dialogue, no translation needed. Around 75–80 minutes. At the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House.

Saigon River at night: the two-hour cruise covers the stretch of river through the city. The skyline is illuminated, cargo traffic moves alongside the cruise boats, and the air is cooler than the daytime city. Dinner is served on board.

Dinner on the water: dinner is served on board throughout the 2-hour cruise. Dining style depends on the cruise option selected.

Two cruise options: Option A (standard cruise) and Option B (luxury cruise with premium experience on board). See the options table in the price section.

Optional motorbike street food tour: after the cruise, guests who want to continue the evening can add a motorbike street food ride through the city. Entirely optional — for guests who want to see Saigon’s late-night eating scene from the back of a motorbike. Advise TNK at booking.

About A O Show

A O Show — Lune Productions

Created by Lune Productions. Playing continuously in Ho Chi Minh City since 2013. International tours to France, Australia, and the United States. Performed by graduates of the Vietnam School of Circus Arts.

Running time: approximately 75–80 minutes, no intermission.

Venue: Ho Chi Minh City Opera House (Nhà hát Thành phố), 7 Công Trường Lam Sơn, Bến Nghé, District 1.

A O — the name comes from ‘àó’, a Vietnamese interjection used to express wonder or surprise — follows two characters navigating the transition from rural to urban Vietnam. The story is told entirely through the body: acrobats manipulate giant bamboo poles, toss each other through the air, and form human towers, while dancers weave through the structures. The live music, performed by a small band of traditional Vietnamese instruments at the side of the stage, carries the emotional arc of the performance. The bamboo work is the centrepiece — poles used as springboards, platforms, trapezes, and architectural elements in constantly shifting configurations.

There is no spoken language in the performance. The show is equally accessible and equally engaging for all nationalities. Children above approximately 5 generally find it captivating. Adults who have seen Cirque du Soleil productions often say A O is more intimate and more culturally specific — it tells a Vietnamese story with Vietnamese bodies and Vietnamese sounds, rather than a universal spectacle.

The Ho Chi Minh City Opera House itself is worth a moment on arrival: a French colonial building completed in 1900, recently restored, and one of the most handsome facades in the city. The interior has good sight lines from most seats. TNK secures Aah class tickets for Option A and VIP class tickets for Option B.

Dinner cruise options

Two cruise options are available. Both cover the same Saigon River route and include dinner on board. The difference is the experience level and the price.

Option Cruise type Includes What’s on board
A Standard cruise A O Show ticket included Dinner on board. 2-hour scenic cruise along the Saigon River.
B Luxury cruise A O Show ticket included Dinner on board with live entertainment. Premium experience on the water.

Option A (standard cruise) suits most groups well. Option B (luxury cruise) is for groups who want a more special evening on the water.

– Photography: permitted before the show and during the final bow. Flash photography and video recording during the performance are not permitted.

– Latecomers: the show starts on time. The guide manages the schedule from hotel pickup to ensure arrival before the performance begins. If your hotel pickup is delayed, inform the guide immediately.

What to wear

– Smart casual for the Opera House — no swimwear, flip-flops, or very casual beachwear. Light trousers and a shirt or blouse are appropriate.

– The cruise deck is open — a light layer is useful on the river in the evening, especially in the cooler months (December–February).

Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1

Evening — Hotel → A O Show (Opera House) → Saigon River dinner cruise → Hotel

5:00–5:15 PM Hotel pickup — District 1

The guide and vehicle collect the group from your hotel lobby. The drive to the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House takes approximately 10–15 minutes from most District 1 hotels. The guide provides a brief introduction to A O Show and the evening programme on the way.

~5:30 PM Arrival at the Opera House — doors open

The group arrives at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House (7 Công Trường Lam Sơn, Bến Nghé, District 1). Doors open approximately 30 minutes before the show. The guide assists with ticket collection. Time to explore the foyer, take photos of the exterior, and find your seats before the performance begins.

~6:00 PM A O Show — performance begins

The performance begins at 6:00 PM and runs for approximately 75–80 minutes without intermission. The guide waits in the foyer or nearby and is available after the show.

The show opens in a rural landscape: bamboo poles rise from the stage, held by performers who manipulate them as platforms, poles, and flight paths. Acrobats are launched between them, caught, and sent airborne again. The lighting shifts the space from open sky to dense forest to city street as the story moves from countryside to city — following what the show describes as the journey of the Vietnamese people in one generation. The live band at stage right plays traditional southern Vietnamese instruments throughout: đàn kìm, đàn tranh, and percussion. The show ends approximately 7:20–7:30 PM.

~7:30 PM Transfer to the river pier

The group exits the theatre and the guide leads them to the vehicle for the short transfer to the pier. The pier for most cruise departures is on the Saigon River waterfront near Bạch Đằng, approximately 10 minutes from the Opera House. The guide assists with boarding.

~8:00 PM Dinner cruise departs — Saigon River

The cruise departs on time. The first section of the cruise heads south along the river — past the city’s riverside hotels and towers on the left bank, past the older industrial and residential waterfront on the right. Dinner is served shortly after departure. Depending on the cruise option selected:
• Option A (standard cruise): dinner is served and the river views are the entertainment. A relaxed two hours on the Saigon River at night.
• Option B (luxury cruise): a more premium experience on the water with live entertainment on board. The guide will explain what is included based on the vessel confirmed for your date.

The cruise reverses and returns upstream around the halfway point, giving different views of the skyline. The river is active throughout the evening — cargo barges, small fishing vessels, and other cruise boats share the waterway. The city viewed from the river at night is genuinely striking.

~9:30–10:00 PM Return to pier — vehicle transfer to hotel

The cruise docks at the pier. The guide and vehicle are waiting. Transfer back to your hotel in District 1. End of tour.

Frequently asked questions

What is A O Show exactly — is it a circus?

A O Show is best described as contemporary Vietnamese circus — but that label undersells it. The production is created by Lune Productions, the leading Vietnamese performing arts company, and combines traditional Vietnamese acrobatics with modern choreography, live traditional music, and contemporary staging. The bamboo work is the most distinctive element: large bamboo poles are manipulated by the performers as structural elements, flight platforms, and props in ways that have no direct equivalent in Western circus. The show has toured internationally and regularly receives standing ovations. It is approximately 75–80 minutes and has no intermission and no spoken dialogue.

Which cruise option is right for my group?

Option A (standard cruise) is right for most groups — a relaxed dinner on the river with the Saigon skyline at night. Option B (luxury cruise) is for groups who want a more premium evening on the water. Contact TNK and describe what your group is looking for — TNK will confirm the best fit based on availability and budget.

Is A O Show suitable for children?

Yes, from approximately 5 years old upward. Younger children can attend but may not sustain engagement for the full 75–80 minutes. Children under 4 are admitted free on a parent’s lap. Children 4 and above require a ticket. The show has no disturbing content — it is acrobatic and musical throughout. The venue is air-conditioned. Children who enjoy physical performance, gymnastics, or dance tend to find it captivating; children who are easily restless in darkened theatres may not.

Is the dinner cruise a private boat?

No. The dinner cruise is a shared vessel — other guests are on board. Your private booking covers the hotel pickup and drop-off vehicle and the dedicated guide, not a private cruise boat. If your group wants a fully private river dining experience, TNK can arrange a separate private boat charter — contact TNK for pricing and availability.

What if A O Show is not playing on my date?

A O Show plays several nights per week at the Opera House, not every night. TNK checks availability when you submit a booking enquiry and confirms the date. If the show is not playing on your preferred date, TNK can advise on the nearest available date or suggest alternative evening programmes in Ho Chi Minh City. Always check with TNK before finalising your travel dates if A O Show is a priority.

Can we add the motorbike street food tour on the same night?

Yes. The motorbike tour departs from the cruise pier at approximately 9:30–10:00 PM and runs until around midnight. It covers Saigon’s late-night eating streets by motorbike with a local guide. It is an active, slightly adventurous addition to the evening and works well after the more formal show and cruise. Advise TNK at booking and the local guide will be arranged to meet at the pier.
