Tour snapshot
Overview
One city. Three centuries of history. One day.
Ho Chi Minh City is one of Southeast Asia’s most layered metropolises — a place where a French colonial post office sits beside a glass skyscraper, and where a war museum a short walk from a 300-year-old Chinese temple tells a history that still shapes the country today. This full-day city tour is built to make sense of all of it.
From the grand civic architecture of District 1 to the incense-filled alleyways of Cho Lon, from the sobering halls of the War Remnants Museum to a water bus ride with views of Landmark 81 — you’ll leave with a real understanding of this city, not just a list of landmarks ticked off a map.
Duration: Full day (approx. 10 hours)
Departure: Daily from Ho Chi Minh City
Languages: English & Chinese-speaking guides
Group Size: 8–12 people
Why choose TNK Travel’s Ho Chi Minh City full day tour?
Most city tours move fast and say little. This one is designed differently — small groups of 8–12 people mean your guide has time to explain, answer questions, and take you places a 30-seat bus can’t go. Over 1,000,000 travelers have trusted TNK Travel for their Vietnam journey, and our local guides bring a personal connection to this city that no script can replicate.
Tour Highlights
French colonial landmarks:
- Notre Dame Cathedral — Neo-Romanesque architecture built entirely from materials shipped from France, now under ongoing restoration (exterior visit)
- Saigon Central Post Office — designed under Gustave Eiffel’s influence, with a soaring vaulted ceiling and original colonial-era maps still on the walls
War history & independence:
- Reunification Palace (Independence Palace) — preserved exactly as it was on April 30, 1975, including the presidential apartments, war rooms, and underground command bunkers
- War Remnants Museum — one of the most visited museums in Vietnam, with an unflinching photographic record of the American War and its aftermath
Chinatown (Cho Lon):
- Thien Hau Pagoda — one of the oldest and most atmospheric Chinese temples in Ho Chi Minh City, filled with coils of incense and devoted to the Sea Goddess
- Binh Tay Market — the real wholesale market of Cho Lon, less touristy than Ben Thanh and far more alive with daily commerce
Saigon River water bus:
- Board the public water bus for a scenic crossing of the Saigon River — skyline views of Landmark 81, Bitexco Financial Tower, and the emerging Thu Thiem district
- One of the best ways to see the city’s rapid transformation from the water, used daily by commuters rather than tourists

Itinerary
Explore Ho Chi Minh City: Full-Day Guided Tour
Your guide meets you at your hotel in central District 1. Board your air-conditioned vehicle and get a brief orientation on the day ahead. As you move through the early morning streets, your guide introduces Saigon's layout — a city of 24 districts that was once the capital of a French colonial territory, a front line in a decades-long war, and is now one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia.
08:00 – 09:00 AM Notre Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office
Start in the heart of colonial Saigon at Paris Square — the civic center the French built to anchor their Indochina administration. Notre Dame Cathedral, completed in 1880, was constructed entirely from materials imported from France: red brick from Toulouse, stained glass from Paris. The twin bell towers are a landmark visible from much of the district. The cathedral is currently undergoing restoration, but the exterior and square remain fully accessible.
Steps away, the Saigon Central Post Office is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Vietnam. Designed under the influence of Gustave Eiffel's team, the building's soaring arched ceiling, ornate ironwork, and original hand-painted maps of the telegraph network on the interior walls make it far more than just a functional building. It's still a working post office today — you can send a postcard home from here.
09:00 – 10:00 AM War Remnants Museum A short drive to one of the most visited museums in Vietnam. The War Remnants Museum
documents the American War (known as the Vietnam War in the West) from the Vietnamese perspective — through the photographs of 134 international war correspondents who were killed during the conflict, captured military equipment in the courtyard, and stark exhibitions on Agent Orange and its generational effects.
This is not an easy museum. It is, however, an essential one for understanding why modern Vietnam is the way it is. Your guide provides context and is available to answer questions throughout.
10:00 – 11:30 AM Reunification Palace (Independence Palace)
Drive to the former Presidential Palace — the site where, on April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese tanks broke through the iron gates and ended the Vietnam War. The palace has been preserved almost exactly as it was on that day, which makes it one of the most remarkable time-capsule buildings in Southeast Asia.
Your guide leads you through the formal reception rooms, the presidential living quarters, the rooftop helipad from which the last helicopters departed, and — most memorably — the underground command bunkers where communications and military operations were run during the final years of the war. The 1960s modernist design by architect Ngo Viet Thu is striking in itself, separate from the history it contains.
12:00 – 01:00 PM Lunch
Lunch at a local restaurant in District 1 or nearby — authentic Vietnamese food in a setting that isn't aimed primarily at tourists. Your guide will be there to help navigate the menu. The meal is included in your tour price.
01:30 – 03:00 PM Cho Lon — Chinatown
Drive to Cho Lon — Ho Chi Minh City's Chinese district, established by Hoa (ethnic Chinese) merchants in the late 18th century. This is one of the largest and most historically significant Chinatowns in Southeast Asia, and unlike many tourist-facing versions of such neighborhoods, it is still a fully functioning commercial and residential district.
Thien Hau Pagoda, dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu and patroness of sailors, is the anchor of the visit. Founded in the early 1800s, the pagoda is built in traditional southern Chinese style with elaborately decorated roof ridges covered in ceramic figures depicting scenes from Chinese mythology. Inside, large coils of incense hang from the ceiling, burning slowly over days or weeks as offerings from devotees. The atmosphere is dense with smoke and devotion.
From the pagoda, walk through the surrounding lanes to Binh Tay Market — the true wholesale market of Cho Lon, built in 1928 and still operating as the commercial heart of the district. Less polished than Ben Thanh, more alive with actual trade.
03:15 – 04:00 PM Saigon River Water Bus
Board the public Saigon River water bus at Bach Dang wharf for a scenic crossing of the river. This is the same vessel used by thousands of daily commuters — a deliberate choice, because it puts you on the water alongside real city life rather than a tourist boat.
The views from the water are some of the best in the city: Landmark 81 (the tallest building in Vietnam and one of the tallest in Southeast Asia), the lotus-inspired Bitexco Financial Tower, the historic riverside warehouses, and across the water, the rapidly developing Thu Thiem district rising from what was marshland a decade ago. The crossing takes about 20–30 minutes and ends at the Thu Thiem or Thanh Da terminal, from where your vehicle collects you.
04:30 – 05:00 PM Ben Thanh Market Area (Optional)
If time allows, your guide can take you past Ben Thanh Market — one of the most recognized landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City and a good spot for a final browse of local goods, Vietnamese coffee, or dried snacks to take home. This stop is flexible based on the group's energy and interest.
05:30 – 06:00 PM Hotel Drop-Off, District 1

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the War Remnants Museum suitable for children?
The museum contains graphic imagery of war and its aftermath, including photographs that are not easy viewing for adults, let alone children. We recommend the museum for travelers aged 14 and above. Your guide can provide context and prepare the group beforehand. Children under 14 can skip this stop and wait at a nearby cafe with the driver if preferred.
Is Notre Dame Cathedral open for entry?
Notre Dame Cathedral is currently undergoing restoration work and the interior is not open to visitors. The tour includes an exterior visit and time in the surrounding Paris Square, which remains one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
What’s the difference between Reunification Palace and Independence Palace?
They’re the same building. It was known as Independence Palace during the South Vietnamese government era, and renamed Reunification Palace after 1975. The official name today is Reunification Palace, though both terms are used interchangeably.
Can I skip any stops?
Yes. The tour is flexible — if there’s a site you’d prefer to skip, your guide can adjust the time at other stops accordingly. Just let us know when booking or at the start of the day.
What language is the tour in?
Our standard group tours are conducted in English. Chinese-speaking guides are also available. For Spanish, French, German, Japanese, or Korean, please contact us at least 5 days in advance to arrange.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Ho Chi Minh City?
Yes — it’s specifically designed for first-time visitors who want a comprehensive, well-explained introduction to the city. Repeat visitors who want to go deeper into a specific neighborhood or theme might prefer a private tour, which we can customize.
How is this different from doing a self-guided visit to the same sites?
The sites are publicly accessible, yes. What the guide adds is the connective tissue — the historical context that links Notre Dame to the war museum to the independence movement to Cho Lon. Without that, you’re looking at buildings. With it, you’re reading a city.
