Overview
The Cu Chi Tunnels Mekong Delta full day tour from Ho Chi Minh City combines two of southern Vietnam’s most famous destinations in a single day.
In the morning, travelers explore the historic Cu Chi Tunnels underground network. In the afternoon, the journey continues to the Mekong Delta for river cruises, local workshops, and a sampan ride through peaceful canals.
This tour combines two of the most visited sites in the Ho Chi Minh City region — the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta — in a single long day. The two destinations are in opposite directions from the city: Cu Chi is 70 kilometres northwest, the Mekong Delta is south. The itinerary works by going to Cu Chi first in the morning when the site is cooler and less crowded, then driving south to the delta for the afternoon.
Cu Chi takes up the first half of the day. The tunnel complex covers a large area of scrub forest in Cu Chi district and the guided visit runs for about two hours above and below ground. You see the trapdoor entrances, the ventilation shafts, the weapons workshops, and the field kitchens — and you have the option to enter a section of the original tunnel, which has been widened slightly from its wartime dimensions but remains narrow, low, and dark.
The Mekong Delta section focuses on the Tien River and the island and canal network south of My Tho. The visit follows a similar pattern to TNK’s dedicated Mekong day tour: motorboat cruise on the river, a series of island stops for folk music, fruit tasting, honey farm, and coconut candy workshop, then lunch and a hand-rowed sampan ride through the interior canals. The pace is slower and the environment is quieter than Cu Chi.
Because the tour covers two separate destinations roughly 150 kilometres apart, the day is long — pickup at 7:00–7:30 AM and drop-off at 6:30–7:00 PM. Both halves are substantive and neither feels rushed, but guests should come prepared for a full day rather than a half-day excursion.
This Cu Chi Tunnels Mekong Delta full day tour from Ho Chi Minh City is ideal for travelers who want to experience both Vietnam’s wartime history and the vibrant river life of the Mekong Delta in one day.
Why TNK Travel for this tour
– Two destinations, one transfer: Cu Chi and the Mekong Delta are covered in a single day without requiring guests to arrange separate tours, separate transfers, or separate pickup times.
– Morning Cu Chi, afternoon Mekong: the sequence is deliberate. Cu Chi is visited in the morning when the forested site is shaded and the group can move at its own pace before the heat of midday. The Mekong Delta section in the afternoon suits the slower, more relaxed activities on the river.
– Small group maximum 12: the group stays at 12 or fewer throughout the day, which matters particularly at Cu Chi where a smaller group can explore the site without bottlenecks at tunnel entrances or crowding at the display points.
– All activities included: Cu Chi Tunnels entrance fee, motorboat cruise, sampan ride, folk music performance, fruit and honey tasting, coconut candy workshop, and lunch. No additional payments required on the day except personal purchases and optional shooting range fees at Cu Chi.
– Trusted operator since 2000: TNK Travel is ranked #3 on TripAdvisor with over 24,000 verified reviews and has operated this combined route for over two decades.
Tour highlights
– Cu Chi Tunnels — documentary film: the visit begins with a short film (approximately 15 minutes) that provides the historical and geographical context for the site. The film was produced in the Vietnamese style and is presented without understatement — it is part of the experience. Your guide will add context before and after.
– Cu Chi Tunnels — trapdoor entrances: your guide opens a trapdoor in the ground and demonstrates how the entrances were concealed. Even knowing they are there, the openings are nearly invisible from standing height. The entrances are small enough that entering requires full compression of the body — most adults cannot enter without twisting sideways.
– Cu Chi Tunnels — above-ground trail: the guided walk covers the key above-ground features: ventilation shafts disguised as termite mounds, a weapons workshop where unexploded US ordnance was converted into traps and mines, a field kitchen with multiple underground flue outlets designed to disperse smoke so it could not be detected from the air, and B-52 bomb craters still visible in the ground. The trail takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
– Cu Chi Tunnels — tunnel entry (optional): guests can choose to enter a section of the original tunnel. The passage has been widened slightly for visitors but remains low — most adults need to crouch or crawl. It is dark, narrow, and close. Exit hatches are spaced along the route. Entry is completely optional. Most guests attempt it; most find it more confronting than they expected. That reaction is part of what makes the visit meaningful.
– Tea and cassava tasting: served at the end of the Cu Chi section. Cassava — dried or boiled and dipped in ground peanut and sesame — with jasmine tea. This was the staple food of the tunnel communities during the war. Simple, and better in context.
– Shooting range (optional, not included): a shooting range at the Cu Chi complex offers the chance to fire period weapons for a fee charged per round. This is not included in the tour price. Your guide will point it out and advise on current pricing if you are interested. No obligation.
– Mekong River motorboat cruise: from the pier, the group boards a traditional motorboat and heads out on the Tien River — one of the two main distributaries of the Mekong in Vietnam. The boat passes the four islands — Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise — and docks at the first island for the workshop and farm stops.
– Đờ́n ca tài tứ folk music: a live performance by local musicians in a family home or riverside pavilion on the island. Traditional southern Vietnamese instruments — đàn bầu, đàn kìm, đàn cò — and vocal performance. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2013. About 20 minutes; your guide translates and explains.
– Tropical fruit tasting and honey tea: fresh seasonal fruit from the island orchards with honey tea. Your guide explains what is in season.
– Bee farm and coconut candy workshop: a working family honey farm and a hands-on coconut candy demonstration. Tasting at both. Finished coconut candy available to purchase.
– Vietnamese lunch: a set menu at a riverside restaurant. Typical dishes: elephant ear fish (cá tai tượng) fried whole and served with rice paper and herbs for wrapping, crispy spring rolls, stir-fried vegetables, steamed rice, soup, and fruit. Vegetarian options available if requested at booking.
– Hand-rowed sampan through the canals: after lunch, narrow wooden boats carry guests through interior canals beneath a canopy of coconut palms. Three to four guests per boat, rowed by local boatwomen. About two kilometres, 30–40 minutes. Consistently the activity guests mention most after the day is done.

What to wear & bring
– Clothing: light, comfortable clothes. Long trousers are recommended for Cu Chi — the forested trail involves low vegetation and the tunnel sections are dusty. Modest dress is appropriate for any temple or pagoda visit in the Mekong section.
– Footwear: closed-toe shoes with grip. The Cu Chi trail runs over tree roots, uneven ground, and soft soil. Sandals are not suitable for this section. For the Mekong Delta boat and canal sections, sandals are fine.
– Sun protection: hat and sunscreen. Parts of the Cu Chi trail and the Mekong motorboat cruise are exposed.
– Rain layer: a light raincoat, especially May–October. The Mekong Delta section is partly exposed.
– Cash: for optional shooting range fees at Cu Chi and personal purchases at workshop stops. Tipping your guide, driver, and boatwomen is optional but appreciated.
Physical requirements
– Moderate activity level. The day involves walking on uneven jungle paths at Cu Chi, getting in and out of boats multiple times in the delta, and standing for extended periods.
– Entering the Cu Chi tunnel sections requires crouching or crawling in a low, narrow, dark space. This is entirely optional — guests who do not enter can observe the entrance and wait above ground.
– The Cu Chi trail has no lift access and the terrain is uneven. Not recommended for guests with serious back problems, severe claustrophobia, or mobility limitations that prevent walking on uneven ground.
– The sampan boats sit low in the water and require careful boarding — your guide assists.
– Pregnant guests should consult their doctor before booking.
Weather
– The tour operates year-round including light rain. Cu Chi’s forested canopy provides shade; the Mekong Delta is partly exposed.
– In the event of severe weather, TNK Travel may adjust the itinerary while maintaining all major activities.
– If TNK Travel cancels due to severe weather, guests receive a full refund or can reschedule.

Itinerary
Cu Chi Tunnels - Mekong Delta
Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby in District 1. The vehicle — an air-conditioned minivan — departs for Cu Chi, approximately 70 kilometres northwest of the city. The drive takes about 90 minutes. Your guide introduces the day’s programme and provides background on the Cu Chi Tunnels — the history of the district, why the tunnel network was built, and how it functioned during the American War.
8:30–9:00 AM Arrive at Cu Chi Tunnels
The vehicle arrives at the Ben Dinh section of the Cu Chi Tunnels complex, the section used for most guided group visits. The site covers a large area of scrub forest in Cu Chi district; the tunnels themselves run beneath it for over 200 kilometres. The visit begins with a short documentary film — approximately 15 minutes — that sets the historical context: the geography of Cu Chi, the communities that lived and fought here, and the construction and expansion of the tunnel network from the 1940s through the 1970s.
9:00–11:00 AM Cu Chi Tunnels guided tour
The guided walk covers the above-ground and below-ground features of the site over approximately two hours.
Above ground, the trail moves between the key features: trapdoor entrances hidden in the undergrowth (your guide opens one to demonstrate how invisible they are from standing height), ventilation shafts disguised as termite mounds, a weapons manufacturing workshop where unexploded American ordnance was disassembled and repurposed, a field kitchen engineered to disperse cooking smoke through multiple underground flue outlets across a wide area, and B-52 bomb craters still clearly visible in the earth from Arc Light strikes during the war.
At the tunnel entrances, guests can choose to enter a section of the original network. The passages have been widened slightly for visitors but remain low — most adults must crouch considerably or crawl on hands and knees. The tunnels are dark and narrow. Exit hatches are positioned at intervals along the route. Entry is entirely optional. Guests who prefer not to enter can observe the entrance and wait above ground — the rest of the visit is fully accessible without going underground.
At the end of the Cu Chi section, the group is served tea and cassava — the food that sustained the tunnel communities during the war: cassava dried or boiled and dipped in ground peanut and sesame, with jasmine tea. Simple food with a lot of context.
The shooting range is available at the complex for an additional fee (not included). Your guide will point it out if you are interested.
11:00 AM Drive south to the Mekong Delta
The vehicle departs Cu Chi and drives south through Ho Chi Minh City toward My Tho in Tiền Giang Province, approximately 70 kilometres. The drive takes about 90 minutes. Your guide uses this time to introduce the Mekong Delta — the river system, the provinces, and what to expect from the afternoon section of the tour.
12:30–1:30 PM Mekong River motorboat cruise — island workshops
From the pier, the group boards a traditional motorboat for the Tien River cruise. The river is wide and busy with working boat traffic. The motorboat heads toward the four islands — Dragon (Cồn Rồng), Unicorn (Cồn Lân), Phoenix (Cồn Phụng), and Tortoise (Cồn Quải) — and docks at the first island for the workshop and farm stops:
• Đờ́n ca tài tứ folk music: a live performance in a family home or riverside pavilion. Local musicians play traditional southern Vietnamese instruments. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2013. About 20 minutes.
• Tropical fruit tasting: fresh seasonal fruit from the island orchards with honey tea.
• Bee farm visit: working family honey farm. Traditional harvesting demonstrated; tasting included.
• Coconut candy workshop: full candy-making process from raw coconut. Guests can participate. Products available to purchase.
1:30–2:30 PM Lunch
A set menu lunch at a riverside restaurant. Typical dishes: elephant ear fish (cá tai tượng) fried whole and served with rice paper, herbs, and dipping sauce; crispy spring rolls (chả giò); stir-fried vegetables; steamed rice; soup; and fresh fruit. Vegetarian alternatives available if requested at booking.
2:30–3:30 PM Hand-rowed sampan through the canals
After lunch the group moves to the sampan dock. Narrow wooden boats carry three to four guests each, rowed by local boatwomen through interior canals beneath a canopy of coconut palms. The route is about two kilometres through waterways too narrow for the motorboat — past stilted houses, small vegetable plots, and fishing nets strung across the narrower channels. About 30–40 minutes. This is consistently the activity guests mention most when the day is over.
3:30 PM Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City
The vehicle departs the delta for the return drive to Ho Chi Minh City. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic.
6:30–7:00 PM Hotel drop-off — end of tour
Drop-off at your hotel in District 1.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to go inside the Cu Chi tunnel?
No. Entering the tunnel sections is entirely optional. The tunnels have been widened slightly for visitors but remain low, narrow, and dark. Some guests find them too claustrophobic to continue after a few metres and exit at the first hatch. The rest of the Cu Chi visit — the above-ground trail, the trapdoor and weapons displays, the documentary film, the tea and cassava — is accessible without going underground. There is no pressure to enter and your guide will not make it an issue if you choose not to.
Is the day too long? Will I be tired?
The tour runs approximately 12 hours. The pace is managed so that neither destination feels rushed — Cu Chi gets about two hours on the ground, the Mekong Delta section about three hours including lunch. The two 90-minute drives are in an air-conditioned vehicle and give you time to rest between the sites. That said, the day is long and involves moderate activity at both ends. If you have a preference for a shorter day, TNK offers Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta as separate half-day or full-day tours.
What is the shooting range at Cu Chi?
A shooting range at the Cu Chi complex allows visitors to fire period weapons for a fee per round. Available weapons typically include the AK-47 and M16. This is not included in the tour price and is entirely optional. Your guide will point it out and advise on current pricing. Most guests choose not to participate; those who do typically spend 10–15 minutes at the range.
Can I do just Cu Chi or just the Mekong Delta?
Yes. TNK Travel offers Cu Chi Tunnels as a dedicated half-day or full-day tour (tour code PGT-CTCC includes the city as well). The Mekong Delta is available as a dedicated day tour covering My Tho and Ben Tre (MK1) or as the two-day overnight version via Can Tho (GT-MK2). See the related tours section below.
What is the elephant ear fish?
Cá tai tượng is the giant gourami, a large freshwater fish common in the Mekong Delta. It is fried whole in hot oil, which causes the scales to flare outward like ears — hence the name. The fish is brought to the table upright and guests wrap pieces in rice paper with herbs and dipping sauce. The presentation is striking. Vegetarian guests are served alternative dishes — please request this at booking.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, with a note about Cu Chi. The tunnel entry at Cu Chi is optional, and most children find the above-ground trail interesting rather than distressing. The documentary film is presented in a direct style that parents should be aware of in advance. The Mekong Delta section — boat rides, fruit tasting, the workshop visits — is well-suited to children of most ages. Children under 4 travel free; children aged 4–10 pay 75% of the adult rate. Let TNK know the ages of children in your group at booking.
Can vegetarians join this tour?
Yes. Please indicate dietary requirements at booking. The lunch restaurant can prepare vegetarian alternatives to the standard set menu. The fruit tasting, honey tasting, coconut candy, and cassava are all naturally vegetarian.
How does this compare to the LX-CCBL tour?
TNK also offers a Cu Chi & Mekong Delta eco trip (LX-CCBL) that combines Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning with a Ben Luc Mekong farm visit in the afternoon. The LX-CCBL tour goes to Ben Luc rather than My Tho / Ben Tre — it is a shorter drive from the city and focuses on farm activities (tuk tuk, guava orchard, coconut farm, canal motorboat) rather than the river cruise and island workshops of the CMK route. Both tours cover Cu Chi in the morning; the Mekong afternoon experience is quite different. If you want the river cruise, four islands, sampan, and folk music, choose CMK. If you want a more farm-focused, closer-to-the-city delta experience, LX-CCBL may suit you better.
