Overview

A traditional water puppet performance followed by dinner on the Saigon River

This evening tour combines two things that are best experienced in Ho Chi Minh City after dark: a traditional water puppet performance and a dinner cruise on the Saigon River. The whole evening runs about four and a half hours, starting with a hotel pickup at 5:00 PM and ending with a drop-off around 9:30 PM.

Múa rối nước — water puppetry — is one of the few performing art forms that originated in Vietnam and nowhere else. It developed in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam around the 11th century, initially performed in rice paddies and village ponds during harvest festivals. The puppets are carved from fig wood, lacquered for waterproofing, and manipulated by puppeteers standing waist-deep behind a bamboo screen, using a system of rods and strings submerged beneath the water’s surface. What you see from the audience is the puppets moving apparently of their own accord across the water, enacting scenes from Vietnamese folk tales, rural life, and mythology.

After the show, the group transfers to the pier for a dinner cruise on the Saigon River. The river is the original reason this city exists — it was the trade route that made Saigon a port, and it’s still the clearest way to understand the city’s geography. Seen from the water at night, with the Bitexco tower and Landmark 81 lit up on the west bank, the skyline reads very differently from street level.

Why TNK Travel for this evening

  • Two experiences, one evening: the water puppet show and the dinner cruise complement each other well — the performance gives cultural context that makes the river setting more meaningful.
  • Small groups only: maximum 12 people means a more relaxed pace at the theatre and a better experience on the boat.
  • No filler: the itinerary moves cleanly from pickup to show to cruise to drop-off. There are no shopping stops or unnecessary detours.
  • Trusted by over 1,000,000 travellers: TNK Travel has operated tours out of Ho Chi Minh City since 2000, ranked #3 on TripAdvisor with over 24,000 verified reviews.

Tour highlights

  • Water puppet performance (approx. 45 min): a full show at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s dedicated water puppet theatres. The programme typically includes eight to ten scenes: the four sacred animals (dragon, unicorn, tortoise, phoenix), rice farming, fishermen on the lake, the Lê Lợi legend and the restored sword, a dragon dance, and a finale with all puppets on stage. Live musicians playing đàn bầu, đàn nhị, and trống accompany the performance throughout.
  • Saigon River dinner cruise (approx. 90 min): a set Vietnamese dinner served on a river vessel as it moves along the waterfront. The menu draws on southern Vietnamese cuisine: fresh spring rolls, grilled or steamed seafood, caramelised pork or fish, stir-fried vegetables, rice, and dessert. Vegetarian options available on request.
  • Night skyline: the cruise passes landmarks including the Nhà Rồng Wharf (the departure point from which a young Hồ Chí Minh left Vietnam in 1911), the Bitexco Financial Tower with its distinctive helipad, and Landmark 81 — at 461 metres, the tallest building in Vietnam and one of the tallest in Southeast Asia.
  • Live music on board: traditional Vietnamese music accompanies dinner, continuing the cultural thread from the puppet show into the cruise.

Holiday departures — important note

Holiday pricing ($85 USD) applies on the public holidays listed in the pricing section below. Do not assume the tour runs on its standard schedule during Tet or other major holidays without checking first.

Weather

  • The water puppet show is indoors and runs in all weather.
  • The dinner cruise may be modified or rescheduled in the event of severe weather on the river. You will be notified as early as possible if this occurs.

Itinerary

Day 0

Evening — water puppetry & dinner on the river (approx. 4.5 hours)

5:00 – 5:30 PM Hotel pickup

Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby in District 1. The group is small — no more than 12 people — so the pickup round is quick. Exact pickup time within this window depends on your hotel location and will be confirmed the day before.

5:30 – 6:15 PM Transfer to the water puppet theatre

The drive to the theatre takes about 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Your guide will give a brief introduction to water puppetry during the ride — the history of the art form, what the show programme typically includes, and what to watch for during the performance. You’ll also pass some of the city’s colonial-era landmarks along the way, lit up as the evening sets in.

6:30 – 7:15 PM Water puppet performance

The show runs approximately 45 minutes and is performed in a custom-built indoor pool. Puppeteers stand behind a painted bamboo screen at the back of the stage, concealed from the audience, manipulating the puppets through a system of rods and wires under the water. The puppets — carved from fig wood and sealed with lacquer — can swim, spit fire, chase each other, and perform acrobatics.

The programme is divided into scenes, each depicting a different story or theme. Common scenes include: farmers tending rice paddies and celebrating the harvest; fishermen on the lake catching fish that keep escaping; the legend of the restored sword of King Lê Lợi; the unicorn dance; the phoenix and dragon; and a final ensemble with all the major puppets.

The show is performed in Vietnamese, but the visual storytelling is clear without translation. A live ensemble of four to five musicians performs throughout, playing đàn bầu (monochord), đàn nhị (two-string fiddle), tỳ bà (pear-shaped lute), and trống (drum), with a vocalist singing traditional folk lyrics between scenes.

7:15 – 7:30 PM Transfer to the pier

A short transfer from the theatre to the river cruise boarding point. Your guide will handle logistics — you just follow.

7:30 – 9:00 PM Dinner cruise on the Saigon River

The vessel departs from the central waterfront and moves south along the river before looping back. The cruise lasts about 90 minutes.

Dinner is served once the boat is underway: a set menu of Vietnamese dishes, typically including fresh spring rolls with herbs and dipping sauce, a soup course, grilled or steamed seafood (prawns, fish, or squid depending on the day’s catch and season), a caramelised pork or fish dish cooked in a clay pot, stir-fried morning glory or seasonal vegetables, steamed rice, and a dessert of fresh fruit or chè. Soft drinks and beer are available to order from the bar. Let your guide know at the time of booking if you need vegetarian or other dietary adjustments.

The river views change as you move downstream. Closest to the city centre you’ll pass the Nhà Rồng Wharf — the 1863 customs building from which a 21-year-old Hồ Chí Minh boarded a French steamship in 1911, not returning to Vietnam for 30 years. Further along, the west bank opens up to reveal the full height of the Bitexco Financial Tower and Landmark 81 side by side. The illuminated bridges — Khánh Hội, Phú Mỹ — are visible at different points along the route.

Live traditional music plays on deck throughout the cruise, continuing the thread from the water puppet show. The open deck at the back of the boat is a good spot for photographs if the weather is clear.

9:00 – 9:30 PM Return to hotel

The boat docks and the group transfers back to District 1 hotels. Drop-off is approximately 9:30 PM, depending on traffic.

Frequently asked questions

What is water puppetry and where does it come from?

Múa rối nước (literally “dancing puppets on water”) originated in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam around the 11th century. It was originally performed in flooded rice paddies and ponds during harvest festivals, using the water as a stage. The puppets are carved from waterproofed fig wood and operated by puppeteers standing waist-deep behind a screen, using rods and strings concealed beneath the surface. It is one of the few performing art forms that developed entirely within Vietnam, and it remains one of the most distinctive.

Is the water puppet show performed in Vietnamese? Will I understand it?

Yes, the performance is in Vietnamese. However, water puppetry is a visual and musical art form — the stories are told through the movement of the puppets, the music, and the staging, not through dialogue. The scenes are drawn from Vietnamese folk tales and rural imagery that read clearly without translation. Most international audiences follow it comfortably. Your guide will give a programme overview before the show so you know what to expect from each scene.

What is the dinner menu on the cruise?

The set menu varies by season and the vessel’s kitchen, but typically includes fresh spring rolls, a soup course, grilled or steamed seafood, a caramelised pork or fish dish, stir-fried vegetables, steamed rice, and a fruit or chè dessert. If you have dietary restrictions, let us know when booking and we’ll confirm what adjustments can be made. Additional drinks (soft drinks, beer, wine) are available to order at extra cost.

Can the tour run during Tet (Lunar New Year)?

Possibly, but it requires checking first. Both the water puppet theatre and the dinner cruise vessel have their own operating schedules during Tet, and these can change year to year. Some years the theatre closes for several days around the holiday; the cruise may run on a modified programme. TNK Travel will verify availability with both venues before confirming any Tet-period booking. Contact us before booking if your travel dates fall during Tet.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. The water puppet show is genuinely enjoyable for children — the puppets are colourful, the action is fast-paced, and the music is engaging. The dinner cruise is relaxed enough for families. Children under 4 are free; children 4–11 receive a 25% discount.

Is the dinner cruise indoors or outdoors?

Both. The main dining area is an enclosed, air-conditioned cabin. There is also an open-air deck at the rear of the boat, which is good for photography and for watching the city from the water. Most guests move between the two during the cruise.

What landmarks does the cruise pass?

The route varies slightly by vessel and conditions, but typically passes Nhà Rồng Wharf (the 1863 customs house from which Hồ Chí Minh departed Vietnam in 1911), the Bitexco Financial Tower, Landmark 81, and several of the illuminated bridges spanning the river. Your guide will point out landmarks and provide context as you pass them.

How is this different from the Saigon Evening Motorbike Food Tour?

The motorbike tour is a street-level, food-focused experience — you’re moving through neighbourhoods, eating at stalls, and seeing the city from the inside. This tour is more structured: a seated performance followed by a sit-down dinner on the river. The two tours suit different moods and both offer a genuinely different perspective on the city. If you have two evenings in Ho Chi Minh City, they pair well.
